2.4 billion people around the world lack sufficient sanitation and hygiene. The simple act of hand washing with soap can significantly reduce and prevent deaths and a range of illnesses including diarrhoea, chronic malnutrition, pneumonia, and neonatal mortality, among various others.

Founded by Michael Matulick in 2011, Soap Aid is an Australian charity dedicated to saving children’s lives and empowering disadvantaged communities through improved hygiene. They achieve this by reprocessing and recycling discarded soap from hotels across Australia and New Zealand, and distributing the new bars of soap in regions that need it the most. This not only goes a long way in preventing illnesses and saving lives in disadvantaged communities, but also greatly reduces the amount of waste soap that ends up in landfills.

How Soap Aid Works:

Soap Aid follows 5 simple steps to get soap into the hands of disadvantaged communities.

1. Waste soap is collected from hotels

2. This used soap is then returned to the plant for reprocessing

3. Once the reprocessing has been done, it is then repackaged

4. The repackaged soap is redistributed both locally as well as globally

5. Educational material is also included with the repackaged soap to promote the importance of good hygiene practices
